Recap: Metropolitan Indoor Championships

Women’s Recap

Iona’s Kate Avery was named 2014’s NCAA Cross Country champion and continued her stellar season by winning the mile in 4:42.85.

Fordam’s Titi Fagade ran one of the nation’s fastest 500m times, crossing the line in 1:13.26. Her teammate, Danielle Rowe took second in 1:14.72.

St. John’s Isobel Batt-Doyle had a big day. The Australian native won the 3000m in 9:52.83, took second in the mile in 4:55.83 and helped her 4x800m relay team place third in 9:23.68.

“I’m a freshman, so my goals are to just keep improving every week and make it to the elite level," said Isobel. “Everything’s brand new to me, so I just want to keep progressing.”

Rutgers’ Gabrielle Farquharson had a big day as well. She reached 19’ 9.50” to record the furthest mark in the long jump, took the 60m dash in 7.64 and won the 200m in 24.17. Her teammate, Brian Saunders took second in the 200m, running 24.57.

“It’s a good feeling to go one-two with a teammate and score more points for the team,” said Farquharson.

St. John’s ended the meet with a 3:46.74 win in the 4x400m relay that secured their team’s win with 168 points. Rutgers was second in team scoring with 154 points and Forham was third with 85 points.

Men’s Recap

Rajee Dunbar also came away with 60m and 200m victories for the Scarlet Knights, finishing in 6.85 and 21.77.

Brendon Rodney of LIU took the 400m in 47.76.

Rodney’s teammate, Kemar Lewis reached 6’ 8.25” to take the men’s high jump over Clement Gicquel, who left the competition at 6’ 6.25”. 

“Right now I’m working on my approaches,” said Lewis. “I have a lot of work to do, but I'm trying to go to nationals. I’m trying to be great.”

Shaquan Williams of Fairleigh Dickinson ran 1:03.81 to win the 500m.

Rutgers won the meet in team scoring with 167 points. Manhattan College was second with 149.50 and South Connecticut State was third with 98 points.
